Dashboard Technical Review: Clinical Pathology & Patient Monitoring Analysis
This Power BI dashboard delivers a clinical-grade patient monitoring surface for a pathology lab context, tracking two interdependent health metrics — fasting glucose and body weight — against defined clinical targets across a configurable date window for an individually identified patient record. The layout follows a deliberate top-to-bottom, left-to-right storytelling architecture: the KPI card row anchors the top of the canvas as the executive summary layer, delivering immediate status awareness before the viewer ever reaches a chart, while the lower panels progressively deepen the analytical narrative — moving from current-state target variance on the left, to longitudinal trend behavior in the center, to cross-metric correlation on the right — mirroring the natural clinical reasoning sequence of assess, track, and investigate. The KPI card row itself surfaces nine distinct measures across both metric domains simultaneously: current readings, day-over-day delta values, 90-day rolling averages, estimated A1C projection, and percentage change calculations — all rendered with directional indicators and contextual annotations that communicate trend direction without requiring the viewer to interpret a chart. Critically, every card title, subtitle, and data label is fully dynamic, resolving in real time against the selected date context so that no static text exists anywhere in the header layer, and each card is conditionally formatted to switch between red and green based on whether the displayed measure is trending toward or away from its clinical target — transforming the card row into a live status panel rather than a passive data display. The target variance panels display current values against clinical thresholds with explicit absolute and percentage deviation labeling, translating raw measurements into clinical gap analysis in a single visual unit. The Fasting Glucose by Date time-series deploys a stepped line chart overlaid with shaded zone regions — visually partitioning the plot area into yellow caution and red risk bands — so that threshold breaches are communicated through spatial position rather than requiring the viewer to mentally compare a value against a number. The correlation panel anchoring the right side of the dashboard overlays both metrics on a dual-axis line chart, encoding glucose in red and weight in navy against independent y-axes, enabling the analyst or clinician to visually interrogate whether weight movement precedes or follows glucose fluctuation over time. Together, these design choices demonstrate command of intentional dashboard layout and visual flow, dynamic DAX-driven card architecture, conditional color formatting through measures, shaded reference zone construction, rolling average calculations, dual-axis correlation charting, and the BI discipline of building dashboards that guide the viewer through a clinical story — from status, to trend, to insight.
